John has been a familiar face of the Melbourne bike scene for more than a decade. You may have seen him in a number of different bike shops, out on the road supporting organised rides, or up in front of a classroom talking the word of bikes. John's always down to talk touring, or even recount some of his round-the-world experiences.
Brody has been building custom bikes since he was a kid, from the crazy narrow bar fixie bikes of the late 2000’s to the now more prevalent 90’s steel MTB craze. He's also been working in different bike shops around Melbourne for a similar time.
John opened The Rocket Surgeon in November 2020, right after the epic 2020 Melbourne COVID-19 lockdown. Brody was always in the picture as ideas man and creative assistant, and joined the crew officially in December 2020.
Our vision was to create an honest, reputable and dedicated workshop for those in Melbourne's inner-north.
We believe every bike is unique and deserves to be treated with care and attention. We’re not your regular bike shop, in fact, since we don’t sell new bikes, we focus on making your current bike feel new.
We love all bikes and their riders, without exception. If you want to narrow that down a bit though, we particularly have a passion for keeping old bikes on the road and creating new lives for them.
We're also happy to work on things other shops aren't able to, such as internal hub gears, cargo bikes, recumbents, hand-powered cycles, e-bike conversions, custom builds, and full refurbs — drop us a line and let us know what you've got in mind!
The running joke in the workshop is that you can't leave without tan wall tyres - it's definitely a joke but it's no joke that we love them, and carry one of the best stocks in Melbourne.
One of the things we pride ourselves on is same-day servicing - drop it off in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon (if we have the required parts in stock). We're also happy to work with tighter time frames, like a bike service over lunch.
Outside hours pickup and drop off is also available with our bike lock and bike hoop out the front. Make sure to let us know you'd like to do this, and we'll send your unique code.
